Mass transfer and flash recycle rates in an autoclave

A client has several concerns about the design of an autoclave. CM Solutions studied these concerns in detail. The mass transfer coefficient was calculated and compared with that which the agitator could deliver. The residence time in the autoclave was compared with the design flow rates, and the design flows were confirmed by calculating the energy balance for two limiting cases. July 2010

CM Solutions presents at the ALTA conference

Frank Crundwell, from CM Solutions, presented a paper at ALTA 2010. The paper had the title “Optimization of exothermic pressure leaching systems”. The paper examined the effect of the type of cooling systems on the performance of the reactor. For example, cooling could be provided by quench, coils, flash recycle, amongst others. It was found that flash recycle significantly increases the performance of the autoclave. June 2010

Nardo Mennen joins CM Solutions!

CM Solutions is proud to announce that Nardo Mennen joined CM Solutions this month. Nardo has a BSc in Electrical Engineering for the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Nardo has worked on major construction projects, such as Mossgas, and in software development. He will be responsible for software development at CM Solutions. Welcome Nardo! June 2010

Nick du Preez joins CM Solutions!

We are proud to announce that Nick du Preez joined CM Solutions at the beginning of this month. Nick has a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Nick has significant experience in the control of metallurgical circuits, particularly milling and flotation circuits. Nick will be able to add value to our clients through his work as a process consultant. Welcome Nick! May 2010

Graduate training in hydrometallurgy

CM Solutions was honoured to be involved again in the training of graduates in hydrometallurgy at Anglo Platinum. The delegates were asked to study the current operations and compare the operations with new process. They modelled both processes using Cycad Process™, and then studied a number of different scenarios. Changes in the mineralogy, feed rates of matte and solutions concentrations were examined. The models that the delegates developed will be used in the expansion project and by the plant metallurgists after the expansion is commissioned. April 2010

Optimization of a leaching circuit

CM Solutions has recently completed a study into the optimization of a leaching circuit. Although this was a fast track project, CM Solutions found through careful and diligent calculations that the original proposal would not deliver the anticipated improvements. It is always difficult to deliver such news: the initial disappointment must be tempered with the knowledge that significant sums in the capital budget were not wasted. April 2010

Design of pressure vessels for a batch leaching operation

CM Solutions has completed the basic design package for the leaching of a residue at a base metal refinery in the Rustenburg area. April 2010

Modelling of a titanium refinery

CM Solutions has completed the process flow diagrams and mass and energy balances for a titanium refinery. Dec 2009

Review of a financial model for a mining investment

CM Solutions was engaged to review the accuracy of a financial model for a major mining project. Dec 2009

Welcome on board, Justin Lloyd!

We are proud that Justin has joined our ranks! Justin, who joins us from TWP Projects, has worked in both design and production environments. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His responsibility will be to add value to our clients through his work as a process consultant. Welcome Justin! Oct 2009

Nickel-cobalt purification

CM Solutions produced block flow diagrams and mass and energy balances for the treatment of a mixed hydroxide precipitation. May 2009
